DevOps Roadmap 2026: Step-by-Step Guide to Become a DevOps Engineer

📌Why Follow a DevOps Roadmap?

DevOps has more tools than any other area of software engineering, and most beginners fail for one reason: they learn tools in the wrong order. Kubernetes makes no sense without containers, containers make no sense without Linux, and CI/CD makes no sense without Git. This roadmap gives you the sequence that working DevOps engineers and hiring managers actually recommend for 2026, with realistic timelines.

If you would rather follow it with a trainer, our live online DevOps course runs this exact path with real projects and placement support.

📌The DevOps Roadmap at a Glance

StageWhat to learnTime (part-time)

1Linux, networking and Bash scripting3–4 weeks 2Git, GitHub and branching workflows1–2 weeks 3CI/CD with Jenkins and GitHub Actions3 weeks 4Docker and containers2–3 weeks 5Kubernetes and Helm4 weeks 6Cloud (AWS)3–4 weeks 7Terraform and Ansible3 weeks 8Monitoring, logging and GitOps2–3 weeks 9Projects, certification and interviewsongoing

Studying 10–12 hours a week, most people reach job-ready in 5–7 months. In a structured live course it is closer to 3–4 months, because the sequencing and debugging help remove most dead ends.

📌Stage 1: Linux, Networking and Scripting

Almost every server you touch as a DevOps engineer runs Linux. Learn it properly before anything else.

  • File system, permissions, users and groups
  • Processes, signals, systemd services and cron
  • Package managers (apt, yum/dnf)
  • Networking: IP, DNS, ports, TCP vs UDP, HTTP/HTTPS, curl, ss, dig
  • SSH, keys and basic hardening
  • Bash scripting: variables, loops, conditionals, functions, exit codes
  • Milestone: write a script that checks disk usage on a server and sends an alert when it crosses 80%.

    📌Stage 2: Git and GitHub

Every pipeline starts with a commit. You need more than git add and git push.

  • Branching, merging and rebasing
  • Pull requests and code review
  • Branching strategies: trunk-based development vs GitFlow
  • Tags and releases
  • Keep our Git commands cheat sheet handy while you practise.

    📌Stage 3: CI/CD

Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery is the heart of DevOps. Learn one hosted tool and one self-hosted tool.

  • GitHub Actions: workflows, jobs, matrix builds, secrets, environments
  • Jenkins: declarative pipelines, agents, shared libraries
  • Build tools (Maven, Gradle, npm), unit tests and code-quality gates (SonarQube)
  • Artifact storage and versioning
  • Start with our GitHub Actions CI/CD tutorial.

Milestone: a pipeline that builds and tests an app on every pull request and blocks the merge if tests fail.

    📌Stage 4: Docker and Containers

  • Images vs containers, layers and caching
  • Writing Dockerfiles and multi-stage builds
  • Volumes, networks and Docker Compose
  • Registries (Docker Hub, ECR) and image scanning with Trivy
  • The Docker course covers this stage in depth.

Milestone: containerise a three-tier app (front end, API, database) with Docker Compose.

    📌Stage 5: Kubernetes

Kubernetes is the single most valuable DevOps skill in 2026.

  • Pods, Deployments, ReplicaSets, Services and Ingress
  • ConfigMaps, Secrets and persistent volumes
  • Probes, resource requests and limits, autoscaling (HPA)
  • RBAC and namespaces
  • Helm for packaging applications
  • Troubleshooting: CrashLoopBackOff, ImagePullBackOff, Pending pods
  • See the Kubernetes course and our Docker and Kubernetes beginner guide.

    📌Stage 6: Cloud (AWS First)

AWS still has the most DevOps job listings in India and abroad, so start there. Compare providers in AWS vs GCP vs Azure.

  • IAM, VPC, subnets, security groups
  • EC2, load balancers and auto scaling groups
  • S3, RDS, ECR and EKS
  • Cost basics and tagging
  • 📌Stage 7: Infrastructure as Code

  • Terraform: providers, resources, modules, remote state, workspaces
  • Ansible: inventories, playbooks, roles, idempotency
  • Milestone: provision a VPC and an EKS cluster with Terraform from a CI pipeline, not from your laptop.

    📌Stage 8: Observability and GitOps

  • Metrics with Prometheus, dashboards with Grafana
  • Logs with ELK or Loki, alerting and on-call basics
  • SLIs, SLOs and error budgets
  • GitOps with ArgoCD
  • 📌Stage 9: Projects, Certifications and Interviews

Hiring managers hire on evidence. Build these three portfolio projects and put them on GitHub with clear READMEs:

  • 1End-to-end CI/CD pipeline — commit → test → build image → scan → push → deploy to Kubernetes
  • 2Infrastructure as code — a full AWS environment built from Terraform modules
  • 3Observability stack — Prometheus, Grafana and alerts on a running app
  • Useful certifications: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner → AWS Solutions Architect Associate, CKA or CKAD, and HashiCorp Terraform Associate. Then prepare with our DevOps interview questions.

    📌Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Jumping to Kubernetes before you are comfortable with Linux and Docker
  • Watching tutorials without building and breaking things yourself
  • Learning five CI tools instead of mastering one or two
  • Ignoring networking — most production issues are DNS, ports or certificates
  • Building projects only on your laptop instead of a real cloud account
  • 📌What Does a DevOps Engineer Earn?

Freshers typically start around ₹4–8 LPA, experienced DevOps engineers earn ₹8–22 LPA, and SRE or platform roles reach ₹18–50 LPA. The full breakdown is in our DevOps engineer salary guide.
