๐Three Roles, One Toolchain
DevOps engineers, Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) and Platform Engineers all use Linux, CI/CD, containers, Kubernetes, cloud and infrastructure as code. What differs is what they are measured on.
๐What a DevOps Engineer Does
A DevOps engineer automates the path from commit to production: CI/CD pipelines, container builds, Kubernetes deployments, Terraform for infrastructure, and the release process. It is the most common entry role and the one most freshers and career switchers start with.
๐What an SRE Does
Site Reliability Engineering started at Google as "what happens when you ask a software engineer to run operations". SREs define SLIs and SLOs, run on-call, lead incident response and post-mortems, and write software to remove repetitive operational work (toil). Strong observability skills โ Prometheus, Grafana, logging and tracing โ matter more here than anywhere else.
๐What a Platform Engineer Does
Platform engineers build the internal developer platform: self-service templates, golden paths, shared Kubernetes clusters, CI/CD building blocks and developer portals such as Backstage. Their customers are the company's own developers.
๐Which One Should You Aim For?
All three share the same foundation, which is why our DevOps roadmap is the right starting point whichever you choose. Salaries are broken down further in the DevOps engineer salary guide.
